Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered the Interior Ministry to tighten checks on how foundations register, raise money and spend donations.
The order followed the 3 November Cabinet meeting. The government says it wants to stop foundations being used for personal gain or to defraud the public. Money and goods donated for disaster victims and people in need must go to the stated purpose.
Each foundation will have to report its annual results to the Department of Provincial Administration, which registers them. The Interior Ministry’s permanent secretary will set out the details. Officials have not said whether those reports will be public.
